Don't miss: Last week, in my Halo 5: Guardians review , I briefly talked about the game's comprehensive new PvP matchmaking system. However, during the pre-release review period, I didn't really get the chance to properly test it out because the pool of players was small, and restricted to pre-release playlists that threw everyone together regardless of their CSR competitive skill ranking. Now that the game has been out for a week, I've been able to fully evaluate just how good Halo 5's matchmaking is — at least from an anecdotal, personal level — and am reporting back as promised with a short extension to my review to cover this aspect of the game. And so far, I'm really impressed with the way that matchmaking works.

Grifball is a custom gametype within Halo 3, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, and Halo 5: Guardians that was designed to play like a sport rather than a first-person shooter. Two teams of four players face off on opposite sides of a court with a ball spawning in the center. At the start of each round, the two teams rush to the center of the court to retrieve the ball. Each player spawns with a hammer and a sword to help each team accomplish these tasks. Players can use the hammer to quickly take out opposing players without the ball from a distance or, while the sword can be used to try and take out a ball carrier in one hit, forcing a turnover.
The game is primarily played either with a number of untimed rounds or with a single timed continuous round. League play typically uses nine untimed rounds, with the game ending once a team has scored five goals. Matchmaking will normally use the single timed round variant, or, in older games, a five timed-round variant. Grifball gametypes and maps for custom games are available for Halo 3, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Halo 5: There is also a permanent Grifball matchmaking playlist in Halo: In addition to custom lobbies and matchmaking, PlayGrifball regularly runs organized Grifball leagues and events throughout the year, almost all of which are open to all players.
Alternatively, if you notice a lot of other players that are currently free agents also looking for teams, you could start up your own team. The AGLA works on a bid system, where captains bid on and draft players to form their teams — registration for these seasons is all done on an individual basis, and normally all players who register end up on a team.
While the matchmaking playlist is a great way to get some practice and start developing your Grifball skills, the best way to get practice and learn all the little things that veteran players do to take their game to the next level is to regularly play with and against those veteran players. I think it averages out teams based on their ranking not really 'skill' so that teams aren't lopsided, but the ranks seem to have a really wide range. I always assumed that it groups ranks, then tries to put you in a lobby with other players in your rank group. If that can't happen quickly enough, it puts you in the next available match.
Halo 5 Stats are Live!
I've been playing for about a week now, which I admit is not a lot, but the matchmaking in this game seems almost broken. I've played about 50 matches, mostly in the Arena, but a few in Warzone, and I've had about three close matches. Every other game has been a complete landslide for one side or the other. Like, in Slayer, or in CTF, or in the capture point mode. It's not fun to be on either side of those games.

I know this has been said ad -nauseum but the matchmaking system in Halo 4 is a huge joke for casual players such as myself. Now, to be fair, I am a medical student and my career doesn't often allow me to game as much as I used to. In fact I only was able to start playing Halo 4 a couple of weeks ago. Also, since I usually play solo it's impossible for me to ever compete with a team of players in full communication against me. I apologize for my rant but with that being said, is there no way for someone like myself to ever find matches that are competitive, or am I doomed to play with people who have no lives outside of their Xbox s and simply cannot lose?

The first is Ninja Assassins, which can be played with up to 8 other combatants and is a free-for-all mode with Energy Swords, Sniper Rifles and Thruster Packs. Microsoft has revealed several details about how Xbox One's matchmaking system, Smart Match, will improve the generally tedious process of getting a multiplayer game going. Its most notably improvement is that it lets you leave the lobby while it searches for a match. This means you can play one game while Smart Match sets up another - a bit like Disneyland's Flash Pass system. Additionally, you can watch TV, browse the internet, or muck about with various apps while your match is being set up. Better yet, Smart Match will notify you when a game is ready, so you don't need to keep flipping back to some lobby, anxiously awaiting a match that may take several more minutes to get set up.

You can start throwing down in Halo 4 multiplayer matches tomorrow, but Industries has already detailed a major update coming to the ranking system early next year. The "Competitive Skill Rank" system will assign you a skill rank, fully visible on your Waypoint profile, and use it to match you in games with opponents of comparable skill ranks. The announcement notes that you'll get a unique CSR for different game types, so you may be a level 25 in Slayer games and a 30 in CTF games.
